A good command of your paddle will not only allow you to navigate more efficiently, but also to get the most out of every outing on the water.
Here are a few tips to help you improve your paddle stroke and SUP technique.
1. Holding the paddle correctly
Hand position: Hold the paddle with one hand on the T-handle (upper hand) and the other hand on the shaft (lower hand). The width between your hands should be about the width of your shoulders.
Paddle orientation : The paddle blade should be tilted forward for best performance (often the side with the logo).
2. Paddle stroke technique
Immersion : Plunge the paddle forward into the water, about 60-90 cm in front of you. Make sure the whole blade is immersed for an effective stroke.
Pull: Pull the paddle backwards using your core muscles, not just your arms. Keep the blade close to the board (it may even rub the board) for a better trajectory.
Exit: Take the paddle out of the water at your feet to minimise drag and prepare for the next stroke.
3. Use of the body
Core engagement: Use your abdominal muscles and back muscles to pull the paddle. This maximises power and reduces arm fatigue.
Posture: Keep your back straight and knees slightly bent. Good posture improves the efficiency of each paddle stroke.

4. Alignment and trajectory
Straight lines: To maintain a straight trajectory, alternate paddle strokes on each side of the board. Move your hands symmetrically to balance the power.
Correcting direction: If you drift off course, use short paddle strokes on the opposite side to the drift. You can also use the ‘J stroke’ technique where you make a small turn at the end of your paddle stroke.
5. Adjustments for water conditions
Calm waters: Long, steady strokes are ideal for maximising glide and efficiency.
Rough water: Shorter, faster strokes help maintain board stability and control.
6. Practice and improvement
Repetition: Regular practice is essential. Concentrate on one aspect of your technique at a time until it becomes natural.
Hint: Record yourself paddling or ask a friend to watch you to identify areas for improvement.
Mastering SUP paddling technique not only improves your performance but also makes your outings more enjoyable and less tiring. Follow these tips and you'll soon see significant progress.
